Messe Frankfurt wins offshore race and is guaranteed second place in Sailing Arabia The Tour

After fifteen days sailing along the Gulf coastline, Messe Frankfurt, skippered by 21 year old Marcel Herrera, has won the offshore race of leg 6 following a protest. This means that the team has secured at least second place in the EFG Sailing Arabia The Tour 2014 overall. A consistent set of second place results and now one first place in the offshore races has placed them just five and a half points behind first place and they are hoping to finish the event on a high with another offshore win in the final race to Muscat tomorrow.

Inport racing - Ras al Khaimah

Today the team had some inshore racing in Ras al Khaimah. With very short courses, the racing was intense but thrilling for both competitors and the spectators watching from the dockside. Messe Frankfurt finished fourth overall after suffering a grounding just two boat lengths from the start line of the third race. This was a little bit disappointing for the team but their spirit remains high and they now have even more energy and drive to excel in the next leg of the event.

Leg 4 - Dubai to Ras al Khaimah

Leg four of the tour saw the six boat fleet sail from Dubai to Ras al Khaimah in a fresh 12-15 knot breeze. The turquoise blue waters of Dubai provided a welcoming start to the leg that was to challenge the team’s endurance as well as navigational skills. With multiple fishing areas and exclusion zones to contend with the crew remained alert throughout the night to ensure they didn’t become entangled with unwanted debris. After a troublesome start due to some technical difficulties onboard, the team made back the time and were soon on the tail of leaders EFG. A close battle ensued and they finished second place, just a few minutes behind EFG.

Whilst in Dubai, the team were thrilled to welcome their sponsor Messe Frankfurt and their guests to a breakfast at the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club to meet the crew and have a look at the boat before they set sail for Ras al Khaimah. The turnout was fantastic and many flocked to the boat to have a look and get a picture with the crew! The support and enthusiasm from everyone who attended is really appreciated and we are especially grateful to Messe Frankfurt for helping us to fund the campaign.

Another second place for Messe Frankfurt!

On the morning of the third offshore race from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, the crews set off from the dock in extremely light conditions. The high-rise skyline of Abu Dhabi was perfectly reflected in the glassy stillness of the creek and as the sun rose over the awaking city, Messe Frankfurt set off for what would be a very light wind leg to the outstanding city of Dubai.

Messe Frankfurt started well and looked strong on the first upwind leg. However, a significant shift in the breeze saw EFG take a sizeable lead on the fleet as they headed round the first mark and downwind. As night fell, the wind decreased to 3-5 knots which made conditions tricky for the crew but they focused on the task in hand and managed to maintain their position in second place. Later on the wind picked up again and, after a bit of match racing with the Al-Thuraya Bank Muscat Team, they finished in a very well deserved second place. image
